Academica de Coimbra are one of Portuguese football's most intellectually fascinating clubs, deeply tied to the University of Coimbra and representing the student community of Portugal's great academic city. Founded as an athletic association in 1876 with the football section established in 1911, Academica have always carried a distinct identity, their black and white colours worn with the proud spirit of university sport. Known as A Briosa (The Proud One), they have twice won the Taca de Portugal, in 1939 and 2012, and spent many years competing in the Primeira Liga.
