About AZ Alkmaar
AZ Alkmaar are one of Dutch football's most successful clubs of the modern era, a team from the North Holland city of Alkmaar who have twice won the Eredivisie, in 1981 and 2009, and reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 1981. Founded as AZ '67 in 1967, the club grew rapidly into a major force in Dutch football under coach Georg Kessler in their first title-winning campaign, and their 2008-09 Eredivisie triumph under Ronald Koeman came in dramatic fashion, pipping Ajax to the title on the final day. AZ are a regular presence in European competition and one of the Netherlands' foremost football clubs.
AZ Alkmaar were founded in 1967 and play at AFAS Stadion in Alkmaar. They compete in the Eredivisie and have won the Dutch league title in 1981 and 2009. They were UEFA Cup finalists in 1981. The club's colours are red and white.
Red and white vertical stripes are the defining image of AZ Alkmaar, a bold and striking colour combination worn consistently across the club's history. Their 1981 Eredivisie and UEFA Cup final season produced one of the most celebrated kit campaigns in Dutch football history, and the shirts worn during the title-winning campaign of 2008-09 are among the most treasured in modern Dutch football. The AFAS Stadion is one of the finest purpose-built football arenas in the Netherlands, and the red and white stripes that fill it on matchday make for an extraordinary sight.
