About Cobreloa

Cobreloa are one of Chilean football's most beloved clubs, born directly from the copper mining industry that defines the Atacama Desert region. Founded on 7 January 1977 by CODELCO, the state copper company, in Calama in the Antofagasta region, they chose their all-orange kit because the airline Ladeco offered discounted fares to teams that wore orange. That practical decision gave Chilean football one of its most distinctive visual identities. Cobreloa became a continental force almost immediately, reaching the Copa Libertadores Final in both 1981 and 1982, and they remain a symbol of northern Chilean pride.

Founded: 7 January 1977. Stadium: Estadio Zorros del Desierto, Calama. League: Chilean football pyramid. Honours: Copa Libertadores finalists 1981 and 1982, multiple Chilean Primera Division titles. Nicknames: Los Zorros del Desierto (The Desert Foxes).

The all-orange Cobreloa kit is one of the most recognisable in South American football, a bold single-colour statement born out of a budget airline deal that became a badge of identity. Shirts from their Copa Libertadores Final eras in the early 1980s are legendary among collectors of Latin American football. Even today, the orange of Cobreloa stands out instantly against the Atacama landscape and carries the weight of a remarkable footballing story.
