About Melbourne Knights

Melbourne Knights are Australian football's most storied club, a western Melbourne institution founded in 1953 by Croatian immigrants that became the dominant force in the National Soccer League during the 1990s. Originally named Croatia, the club adopted the Knights name in 1993 as part of Australian football's de-ethnicisation drive, but their cultural roots remain a proud part of their identity. Back-to-back NSL champions in 1994 to 1995 and 1995 to 1996, Melbourne Knights produced Mark Viduka and left a legacy as one of the greatest clubs in Australian football history. Founded in 1953, Melbourne Knights are based in the western suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. They currently compete in Victorian Premier League 1, having been part of the National Soccer League from 1984. They play at Knights Stadium, which the club has owned since 1989. Major honours include two NSL championships (1994 to 1995 and 1995 to 1996) and four NSL premiership titles. Their home colours are drawn from the colours of the Croatian flag. The blue, red, and white colours of Melbourne Knights, drawn from the Croatian flag, are one of the most distinctive in Australian football. The kits worn during the back-to-back NSL championship-winning seasons of 1994 to 1995 and 1995 to 1996 are the most celebrated in the club's history, worn by a squad that included the young Mark Viduka before his move to European football. The name change from Croatia to Melbourne Knights did not diminish the pride in those colours, and the club's shirts from the NSL era remain treasured items among the Croatian-Australian community and wider Australian football supporters.
