About Nacional

Club Nacional de Football are one of South America's oldest and most storied clubs, a Montevideo institution founded in 1899 by Uruguayan students who wanted to create a football club for native-born players rather than the foreign-dominated clubs of the era. The tricolores in red, white, and blue have won more Uruguayan league titles than any other club and claimed the Copa Libertadores three times, establishing themselves as genuine giants of South American football.

Founded on 14 May 1899 in Montevideo, Uruguay, the club play at the Estadio Gran Parque Central. Their honours include over 50 Uruguayan Primera Division titles, 3 Copa Libertadores wins (1971, 1980, 1988), and 3 Intercontinental Cup victories. Nicknamed Los Tricolores and Los Bolsos.

The Nacional home shirt is white with red and blue trim, reflecting the three colours of Uruguay's national hero Jose Gervasio Artigas. That distinctive tricolour identity gives Nacional a visual character unlike most South American clubs. The very first home kit from 1899 featured a red shirt with blue sleeves, and the evolution to the predominantly white shirt with tricolour trim has made that detail the defining element of Nacional's identity. The classic Nacional shirt has been produced by a range of suppliers over the decades, with international brands taking over in the modern era while the tricolour identity has never wavered.
