About Panathinaikos
Panathinaikos are the green heart of Athens and one of Greek football's most storied and passionate clubs. Founded in the very first years of organised football in Greece, PAO have collected over 20 league titles and made their mark on European football most memorably in 1971 when they became the first Greek club to reach a European Cup final. That side, which lost narrowly to Ajax at Wembley, is part of Greek football folklore, and the green shirt they wore that night remains a treasured piece of history.
Founded in 1908 and based in Athens, Greece, the club play at the OAKA (Olympic Stadium). Their honours include 20 Greek Super League titles, 18 Greek Cup wins, and a 1971 European Cup final appearance. Nicknamed PAO and defined entirely by their famous deep green colour.
Green is Panathinaikos. That rich, distinctive shade, worn across more than a century of Greek football, is one of the sport's most recognisable national identities. The all-green or green and white home shirts have been produced by various manufacturers over the decades, with Adidas producing some classic PAO kits in the 1980s and 1990s. The shirt worn during the 1971 European Cup final against Ajax at Wembley, though lost on that occasion, carries immense historical prestige and collector value. More recent kits from Hummel and other suppliers have maintained the green tradition that defines everything about this great Athenian club.
