About Petrolul Ploiesti
Petrolul Ploiesti are one of Romanian football's most storied clubs, a yellow and blue institution from the oil city of Ploiesti with a history reaching back to 1924. Nicknamed Gazarii (The Gasmen) and Lupii Galbeni (The Yellow Wolves), the club won the Romanian league title four times, including back-to-back championships in 1957-58 and 1958-59, and achieved perhaps their most famous moment in October 1966 when they defeated Liverpool 3-1 at home in European competition. Three Cupa Romaniei victories complete a remarkable trophy haul, and after a painful bankruptcy in 2016, Petrolul were reestablished by supporters and returned to Liga I in 2022.
Petrolul Ploiesti were founded in 1924 and play at Ilie Oana Stadium in Ploiesti. They compete in Liga I and have won the Romanian league title four times. They hold three Cupa Romaniei titles. Their colours are yellow and blue. The club was reestablished by supporters after going bankrupt in 2016 and returned to Liga I in 2022.
Yellow and blue are the proud colours of Petrolul Ploiesti, a combination as vivid and bold as the oil industry that built this city. The 1965-66 season kit is the most historically significant in the club's history, worn when a Petrolul team beat Liverpool 3-1 on European soil in one of Romania's greatest ever footballing nights. The modern kits worn since the supporters' rebuild and Liga I return carry enormous emotional weight too, representing a community that refused to let its club disappear.
