About Salgueiros

Salgueiros are one of Portuguese football's most fascinating and romantic clubs, born in Porto in 1911 by a group of friends who famously raised their founding money by singing Christmas carols door to door. Choosing red as their colour to distinguish themselves from city rivals FC Porto, Salgueiros spent decades as Porto's third club before earning their finest moment: a 5th-place Primeira Liga finish in 1990-91 that earned them a historic place in European competition. In the 1991-92 UEFA Cup, they faced Cannes in the first round and lost on penalties, in the only European campaign this extraordinary club has ever experienced.

Salgueiros were founded in 1911 in Porto. Their best Primeira Liga finish was 5th in 1990-91, which qualified them for the 1991-92 UEFA Cup. The club effectively ceased professional operations around 2005, was refounded in 2008, and continues in the lower divisions. Their colours are red.

Red has been the colour of Salgueiros since their very earliest days, chosen as a deliberate contrast to the blue and white of FC Porto. The red shirt of Salgueiros represents one of Portuguese football's most romantic and underappreciated stories, a club born in song and built on community spirit. Their Primeira Liga era kits and particularly the shirts worn during their 1991-92 UEFA Cup campaign, a small Porto club competing on the European stage for the one and only time, are treasured by those who know their remarkable history.
