About Velez Sarsfield

Club Atletico Velez Sarsfield are one of Argentine football's most underrated giants, a club from the Buenos Aires neighbourhood of Liniers with a trophy haul that puts many better-known clubs to shame. The 1994 Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup triumph that same year rank among the greatest achievements in Argentine football history. The white shirt with its striking blue V sash is one of South American football's most elegant designs, and the sight of Chilavert sweeping forward for set pieces remains one of football's most surreal and wonderful images. Founded in 1910, Velez Sarsfield play at the Estadio Jose Amalfitani and compete in the Primera Division Argentina. Key honours include 11 Primera Division titles, the 1994 Copa Libertadores, and the 1994 Intercontinental Cup. Known as El Fortin (The Small Fort), the club is one of Argentina's most respected football institutions. The white home shirt with its diagonal blue V sash is Velez Sarsfield's defining garment, a design in use in some form since 1933 and one of the most recognisable in South American football. The 1994 Intercontinental Cup shirts are particularly sought after by collectors. Occasionally the club reverts to Italian flag-inspired designs for special occasions, nodding to the Italian immigrant heritage of the Liniers neighbourhood.
