About Zeljeznicar

FK Zeljeznicar are Bosnia's most decorated football club, a side born from the railway workers of Sarajevo in 1921 and carrying a working-class spirit that has defined them across a century of Balkan football. Their 1972 Yugoslav First League title remains the high point of their socialist-era dominance, and reaching the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 1985 announced them to a wider European audience. Six Bosnian championship titles since independence have confirmed Zeljeznicar's continued pre-eminence in post-war football. Founded in 1921, Zeljeznicar play at the Stadion Grbavica in Sarajevo and compete in the Premijer Liga Bosne i Hercegovine. Key honours include the 1971-72 Yugoslav First League title, six Bosnian championships, and six BiH Cup wins. Known as Zeljo and Plavi (The Blues), their fanbase the Maniacs are one of the Balkans' most passionate supporter groups. Blue and white have been Zeljeznicar's colours since their founding by Sarajevo's railway workers in 1921, chosen to reflect the working-class roots of the club. The 1971-72 title-winning kits and the 1984-85 UEFA Cup semi-final shirts carry enormous historic significance for Bosnian football. The blue home shirt remains one of the most recognisable in Balkan football and the white away kits provide a clean, proud contrast.
